Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society Successfully Conducts Eurocode 7 Workshop

The Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society (SLGS) successfully conducted a full-day Eurocode 7 Workshop on 27th August 2025 via the Zoom platform, attracting around 130 participants from the geotechnical and civil engineering community. The workshop provided practical and directly applicable knowledge for professionals working in foundation design and geotechnical engineering.

The workshop focused on the introduction and application of Eurocode 7 (EC7), covering both testing and design aspects. Participants gained insights into the differences between the previous foundation design code BS 8004 and EC7, and learned how to apply EC7 principles in shallow and deep foundations as well as earth-retaining structures.

The event featured a distinguished panel of resource persons:

  • Eng. K.L.S. Sahabandu (President – SLGS) delivered the welcome address.

  • Eng. (Prof.) Athula Kulathilaka provided an introduction and overview of Eurocode 7.

  • Eng. (Dr.) S.K. Navaratnarajah led the session on the design of shallow foundations.

  • Eng. (Prof.) Saman Thilakasiri conducted the session on pile foundation design.

  • Eng. (Prof.) Nalin De Silva presented the design of earth-retaining structures using EC7.

  • Eng. (Prof.) Athula Kulathilaka concluded the workshop with closing remarks and a summary overview.

The workshop was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions and Q&A sessions with the experts. It was organized on a first-come, first-served basis, providing SLGS members and civil engineering professionals an excellent opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills in line with international standards.

SLGS expresses its sincere gratitude to the resource persons and participants for making the workshop a resounding success and reaffirms its commitment to promoting professional development and knowledge sharing within the geotechnical community.
